Dinghy Sailing

Start Sailing - Level 1

Course Fee £146

This course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge. After completing the course you will be able to hire a dinghy at the Centre. It is recommended that you consolidate this short introduction with the Basic Skills Level 2 course.

Basic Skills - Level 2

Course Fee £146

On completion of this course, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing a dinghy without an Instructor on board in light winds. The course includes sessions on rigging, ropework, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, launching and recovery, capsize recovery, racing, sailing theory and background knowledge. It will be assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Start Sailing Level 1.

Better Sailing – Level 3

Course Fee £146

On completion of the course the successful sailor will be safety conscious and capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light to moderate conditions. The improver course seeks to bridge the gap between Basic Skills (L2) and the advanced modules and is intended to make the transition easier for those sailors wishing to progress further through the scheme, allowing the opportunity to practice and consolidate sailing techniques and experience some of the activities that the advanced modules have to offer.

Seamanship Skills

Course Fee £146

On completion of this course, the successful sailor will be capable of manoeuvring a dinghy in a seamanlike manner and making seamanship decisions in moderate conditions. The course involves sessions on ropework, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, sailing theory and background knowledge, capsize recovery, meteorology. It will be assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Level2/3.

Start Racing

Course Fee £146

On completion of this course, the successful sailor will understand how to sail performance dinghies in all wind conditions that they can expect to encounter, sailing the boat to best advantage at all times. The emphasis is on coaching to improve the candidate’s sailing performance. It will be assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Level 2/3.

Sailing with Spinnakers

Course Fee £146

On completion of this course the successful sailor will understand how to sail a dinghy rigged with an asymmetric or symmetric spinnaker. The course includes sessions on rigging including spinnaker and trapeze, sailing to good advantage, spinnaker hoist, gybe & drop as crew or helm, capsize recovery, and sailing theory and background.

Kayaking and canoeing

BCU 1 Star

Course Fee £146

Suitable for the complete beginner, no experience is necessary. The course concentrates on safe practice, equipment, basic strokes, and fun. A flat water award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills. You will be encouraged to try both kayaks and canoes.

BCU 2 Star

Course Fee £146

This is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. Pre-requisite: BCU 1 Star Award or equivalent ability. This award is obtained by using both kayaks and canoes.

Windsurfing

Start windsurfing

Course Fee £146

Content includes an introduction to the equipment; practice of the skills on a land based simulator; on water demonstration by your instructor; followed by practice afloat and coaching. This course is an ideal preparation for that holiday, and after completing the course you will be able to hire a windsurfer at the Centre.

Intermediate windsurfing

Course Fee £146

This course represents a change of emphasis from instruction to individual coaching. Prerequisites for this course are a degree of confidence in sailing on all points of sailing in light winds. The course will consist of a mixture of simulator, theoretical and on water instruction. You may find it necessary to practice the skills before seeking an assessment at this level.

Family Fun Wet Weekend

A weekend of activities for all the family. You will try out a range of watersports, such as sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and raft building, with the emphasis on learning new skills and having FUN! The aim of this course is to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. Level 2 is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

RYA Safety Boat Course

The safety boat course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, for racing or training activities.

R.Y.A. Powerboat Instructors Course

Course Fee £275

The Instructor is a competent, experienced powerboater who has been trained to teach powerboating up to Level 2. Candidates should hold an RYA Level 2 Powerboat certificate and a valid first aid certificate. Minimum age 16.

This is a requirement for candidates for the RYA Powerboat Instructor course.

Private tuition

Private tuition with a qualified instructor is available. A short intensive course may be just what you need to refresh old skills learnt years ago, or to prepare for an assessment. Tailor made according to your requirements, prices are £25 per hour. Please contact the Centre for further details.


Activity sessions for groups

Taster sessions, or series of sessions, in sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, raft building, rock climbing. All specialist equipment and tuition included, from only £150 for a 3 hour session for up to 10 people. What are you waiting for?

Looking for a birthday present with a difference? you've just found it! A 3 hour session with all equipment and tuition included for the birthday boy or girl, and up to 9 friends. Choose from sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, rock climbing, raft building & problem solving.
